Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow was so much fun! Every fence post has a scarecrow on it or a bunch of corn stalks. We took the 40 min drive North so we could see the place were the Legend of Sleepy Hollow was written by Washington Irving. The night before we procured 3 different versions of the story so the kids could see what it was all about. They loved it!

Then Saturday we took off and we saw the Old Dutch Church, the cemetery where Ichabod was trying to get to before the Headless Horseman got to him. We walked across the bridge the Headless Horseman chased Ichabod across. Once Ichabod was across and out of reach the Headless Horseman then threw his flaming head at him scaring him so bad Sleepy Hollow never saw him again.

We spent most of our time in the cemetery and the church. It was so beautiful! The Mausoleums were incredible. Most of them have a stained glass window directly across from the door so you can look in and see the beautiful window. The last two pictures indicate this practice. It was a great time! We found a mausoleum with the name Graves! Wonder if we are related! We had a wonderful tour guild walk us through the cemetery and show us where everyone who inspired the story was buried. It was pretty cool how it was all put together. He also showed us the church. It was a humble but beautiful building!

I loved that Sleepy Hollow has orange and black road signs with the Headless Horseman riding across the top. It was a fun way to spend a free day! We could have bought tickets to see the Legend reenacted, but we didn't want to scare the kids that bad for $100!
